Identity Verification & Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Compliance

Why we collect this information

Under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009 (AML/CFT Act), real estate agencies in New Zealand are legally required to verify the identity of their clients to prevent financial crime. This is a mandatory step that must be completed before we can enter into an agency agreement to sell a property.

How we verify your identity (Document Verification Service)

To make this process as fast and secure as possible, Far North Coastal Real Estate Limited shares your personal information with our identity verification service providers via a Document Verification Service (DVS). This electronic system allows us to verify your identity remotely without requiring physical certified copies of your documents in the first instance.

What information is collected

When using the DVS, the following personal information may be collected and processed:

  • Identity Data: Your full legal name, date of birth, and residential address.
  • Document Data: Details from your government-issued ID (e.g., Passport or Driver Licence number, expiry date, and version number).
  • Biometric Data: If remote verification is used, the system will request to capture a “liveness” video or photo to match your face against the photo on your ID document.
Where we collect this information from

We collect information directly from you during the verification process, and indirectly from third parties including:

  • AMLHUB, our AML services provider, who assists with identity verification, PEP and sanctions screening, and record-keeping;
  • public registers (for example, the Companies Office and PPSR);
  • identity verification and electronic ID providers;
  • credit reporters and other data providers; and
  • other professionals involved in your transaction (for example, solicitors, accountants, or other agents).

Information collected is held by us and, on our behalf, by AMLHUB at 103 Carlton Gore Rd, Auckland, NZ.

When this information is required

We require this information to perform identity verifications for the sale of properties. This applies to:

  • The primary vendors (sellers).
  • Any beneficial owners or effective controllers of a trust or company (prior to listing), as required under the AML/CFT Act 2009.
Your rights and choices
  • Access to Information: You may request to view and correct the personal information we have collected about you at any time.
  • Consent and Refusal: You have the right to refuse to provide personal information via the electronic DVS.
  • Alternative Methods: If you decline consent for electronic gathering via DVS, please be aware that the processing of your listing may be delayed while alternative verification methods are completed. Far North Coastal Real Estate Limited is happy to accept hard-copy certified documents in lieu of biometric/electronic verification, provided they meet the standards set by the AML/CFT Act.

If you are unable or unwilling to provide identity information via any of the available methods, we will not be able to proceed with your listing.
